Substantial Gainful Activity

This month the Social Security Administration announced the changes to their programs effective January 1, 2009. The Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA)amount is $980 per month for non- blind individuals and $1640 per month for blind individuals. The Substantial Gainful Activity amount under Social Security's disability program is the gross amount that a person can make from working (or the net amount for a person who is self-employed) per month on a continuing or regular basis and they can still be considered disabled. If they make more than the monthly SGA amount on a regular basis they cannot be found disabled under Social Security's rules. Also, starting January 1, 2009, the maximum monthly benefits for someone receiving Social Security Supplemental Insurance or SSI will be $674 per month for an individual and $1011 for a couple.
