The Spirituals Project 3rd Annual Red Gala Event

The Spirituals Project, located on the campus of University of Denver, is a nonprofit community agency. The Spirituals Project mission is to preserve and revitalize the music and teachings of the sacred songs called "spirituals" that were created and sung by enslaved Africans in America in the 18th and 19th centuries. Their goal is to make sure that spirituals will be passed on and preserved for future generations to come. The Spirituals Project hopes to do this by educating the public about spirituals, encouraging appreciation of spirituals as a cultural tradition and arm form, and teaching the historical significance of the African American community.

On Saturday June 16, 2012, The Spirituals Project held their 3rd annual Red Gala event at the Denver Marriot City Center. The Red Gala is The Spirituals Project annual fundraising benefit that is held to honor the memory of enslaved Africans who lost their lives in the pursuit of freedom as well as those who lost their lives from speaking out against social injustice. The 2012 Red Gala Honorees included the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama; Congresswoman for the District of Colorado, Diana DeGette; and Chief Government and Community Relations Officer for Denver Health, Elbra Wedgeworth.

The Sawaya Law Firm proudly sponsored the 3rd Annual Red Gala event this past Saturday. At the Red Gala event Denver attorney Michael Sawaya presented The Spirituals Project award and made a great speech, honoring and recognizing the efforts of Congresswoman Diana DeGette. DeGette is currently serving her 8th term in Congress and is one of the leading voices in the health care debate in this country. Diana DeGette has fought for affordable health care, the expansion of mass transit and the improvement of transportation in the Denver area. DeGette is also committed to protecting the environment and cleaning up environmental waste sites.

The Red Gala event was absolutely beautiful and a success for all. Michael Sawaya and The Sawaya Law Firm were honored to be a part of such a wonderful event and cause.
